Wellness Care

At Shirkey Vet Clinic, we believe annual wellness care is imperative to keeping your pet happy and healthy! Your pet’s health is important and preventive care is necessary. We recommend wellness exams, keeping your pets on a vaccination schedule, and working with us on all facets of wellness care.

During your annual physical exam, your veterinarian thoroughly examines your pet while discussing vaccinations and ongoing wellness. Like you do wellness visits with your doctor, your pet must do the same. During these visits, our team will spend time examining your pet from nose to tail.

Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is a cutting-edge veterinary medicine technique for managing many conditions, including chronic pain in pets. Class IV (cold) laser therapy is especially useful for treating pets that struggle with osteoarthritis pain.
Cold laser therapy is a noninvasive procedure that uses light to stimulate blood flow and increase circulation. It is not a surgical laser that cuts tissue but a laser with different wavelengths to help heal tissues. The laser may even be used as a part of acupuncture in place of the needles.
Your veterinarian will first assess a pet’s pain management needs to determine whether he or she is a good candidate for laser therapy. It is not recommended for pets with cancer to have laser therapy as it could worsen or spread the malignancy. The doctor will create a custom treatment plan. Dogs and cats generally receive the greatest pain relief benefits from a series of eight to ten sessions, usually starting two to three times weekly, tapering down to weekly appointments.
Treatment sessions are tailored to each pet’s individual needs. Smaller dogs may only need eight to 10-minute sessions. A larger dog that suffers from arthritis in multiple joints may benefit from a longer, 30-minute session. During a treatment session, the pet reclines on a table or may even lie on a blanket on the floor. Some veterinarians will even dim the lights and play soothing music, creating a mini “spa” experience for the pet. Your veterinarian may allow you to be present for these sessions, but you will need to wear special goggles to protect your eyes.
Physical therapy helps the pet to recover and become active again. Laser therapy is a common adjunctive treatment that allows faster healing of the surgical incision and helps relieve arthritic pain.
Many arthritic pets respond positively to laser therapy. Some pets even fall asleep during treatment sessions as it is the first time they can finally relax and not be in pain.
In addition to helping manage arthritis pain, veterinary laser therapy has numerous other applications. Treatment with a Class IV laser may help heal wounds, treat skin disorders such as lick granuloma, and help surgical skin incisions heal faster.

Vaccines & Preventatives

Many of the diseases that can affect dogs and cats are preventable through proper pet vaccinations. Let the knowledgeable staff at Shirkey Vet Clinic guide you through setting up a vaccination schedule for your dog or cat to keep him or her protected.

Vaccinations are the most important things you can do for your pet. Click here to learn about essential vaccines for your pet and vaccination guidelines. The second is year-round preventatives that include protection from heartworm disease, fleas, and ticks.

Vaccines for Dogs

Puppies receive a series of vaccines starting at 8 weeks of age through 16 weeks of age, consisting of distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, Bordetella, and rabies.

Adult dogs that have completed all their puppy vaccines will receive all vaccine boosters at one year of age with a heartworm test. After that, heartworm checks are yearly. Bordetella is exposure dependent every 6-12 months. Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza vaccines are given every three years. Rabies vaccines can be every one or two years.

Vaccines for Cats

For kittens, we recommend a series of vaccines starting at eight weeks through 16 weeks of age. We routinely vaccinate for feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia, chlamydia, leukemia, and rabies. We also advise all kittens be tested for feline leukemia and FIV at or after 11 weeks of age.

Adult cats that have completed all their kitten vaccines and leukemia/FIV test will receive boosters at one year of age. After that, vaccines for distemper and leukemia vaccine is given yearly. Rabies vaccines can be every one or two years.
